To get cast in Texas without moving to LA, treat the state as four connected markets: Austin, San Antonio, Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth. Get a Texas agent who covers more than one of them. Self-tape at an LA-level standard. And build a reel from regional work. Texas's expanded film incentive, with $300 million every two years since 2025, is bringing more productions that need Texas-based actors.

Put the essential material in reach.
Start with the work a visitor needs to see, then make credits, representation, and contact details easy to find. The layout should guide attention without getting in the way.

A decade ago, the advice was simple: move to LA. That's not the only path now. Self-taping lets you audition for projects anywhere. Texas's bigger incentive program and its resident-hiring requirement mean more work is shooting here and needs local actors.
Step 1: Work the four markets, not one city
Each Texas metro has its own casting offices, agencies and production scene. Being able to work in more than one multiplies your chances.
| From Austin to... | Distance (approx.) | Drive (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| San Antonio | 80 miles | 1.5 hours |
| Houston | 165 miles | 2.5–3 hours |
| Dallas-Fort Worth | 195 miles | 3 hours |
One honesty rule: "local hire" usually means the production pays no travel or housing. List yourself as local only where you'll accept work on those terms, including a 6 a.m. call time three hours away.
Step 2: Get Texas representation
Texas has established talent agencies that submit actors to regional casting and to out-of-state productions shooting in the state. Many cover more than one metro. A good regional agent gets you seen for work that never shows up on self-submission sites.
Research agencies in your area, follow each one's submission rules exactly, and send a headshot, résumé and reel link.
Step 3: Self-tape like you're competing with LA, because you are
When you tape for a project shooting in New Mexico or Atlanta, your tape sits next to LA actors' tapes. It needs to look as good. Use our self-tape checklist and get your turnaround under 24 hours.
Step 4: Build a reel from regional work
Indie films, student projects, commercials and regional TV all give you footage. Ask for your footage in writing before every wrap. Cut a reel as soon as you have three strong clips. Casting outside Texas can't see your regional work unless you show it to them.
Step 5: Have one home base online
When you don't live in LA, your online presence does even more of the work. One link with your reel, headshots, résumé and agent contact shows casting anywhere in the country that you're a working professional.
Common questions
Can you make a living acting in Texas?
Some actors do, usually through commercials, regional film and TV, industrials and work across several Texas metros. Many combine acting with other work, like most actors everywhere.
Do Texas productions have to hire Texas actors?
Projects funded by the state incentive must hire a required share of paid cast and crew from Texas residents. That works in local actors' favor.
Is Texas a union state for actors?
Texas is a right-to-work state, so union and non-union work coexist. Know your SAG-AFTRA status and submit to match.
