If you get auditions but no callbacks, the problem is almost always the tape, not your look. In LA, first rounds are mostly self-tapes, watched side by side. Fix three things first: the technical basics (framing, sound, eyeline), a tone that matches the show, and one specific choice. Then check that your materials back up the tape.
WORK
CONTACTCASTING-READY ROUTE
Put the essential material in reach.
Start with the work a visitor needs to see, then make credits, representation, and contact details easy to find. The layout should guide attention without getting in the way.

"No callbacks" can mean a few different things. Find your row before you fix anything.
| What's happening | Likely cause | Fix first |
|---|---|---|
| Few or no auditions | Headshot or type doesn't match what you submit for | Your headshots and your submission choices |
| Auditions, no callbacks | The tape: technical problems, wrong tone, or a safe, forgettable read | This article |
| Callbacks, no bookings | Consistency, chemistry or just numbers | Keep going, and keep training |
| Pinned or avails, then released | Normal. Often about height, chemistry or schedule | Nothing. Log it as a win |

The self-tape standard LA casting compares you against
Unless the instructions say otherwise, this is the baseline.
- Orientation: Horizontal (landscape), 16:9.
- Framing: Mid-chest to just above your head. Your eyes sit about a third of the way down the frame.
- Eyeline: Look just off the lens, toward your reader. Put the reader right beside the camera, never across the room.
- Backdrop: Solid blue, gray or another neutral. Stand 3 or more feet in front of it so you don't cast a shadow on it.
- Light: One soft key light in front of you, about 45 degrees off center, plus a weaker fill on the other side. No window directly behind you.
- Sound: A lav mic or a shotgun mic within about 3 feet. Turn off the AC and the fridge. Your reader should be quieter than you.
- Export: 1080p MP4. Name the file exactly as asked. If they don't ask, use FirstLast_Role_Project.
Your LA roommate's ring light and a closet door won't cut it next to actors who have this setup. The whole kit costs less than one headshot session.
Know what casting can and can't ask
On projects under SAG-AFTRA's 2023 TV/Theatrical agreement, self-tape requests have limits. For example, the slate can ask only for your name, height and location (and age, for minors). Casting also can't require specific equipment or backgrounds. Check the current SAG-AFTRA self-tape bulletin for full details. Knowing the rules keeps you from overbuilding a tape that nobody asked for.
The read: tone first, then one choice
Casting might watch dozens of tapes of the same two pages. Two kinds of tape disappear: the safe middle read, and the read that ignores the show's tone.
Before you tape, watch at least one episode of the show, or the creator's last project. Then write one sentence: "In this scene I want ___ from them, and it costs me ___ if I don't get it." Play that. Specific beats loud.
Pre-upload checklist
- Watched it back on a phone, with sound
- Face lit, no shadow on the backdrop
- Reader quieter than me
- Slate matches the instructions exactly
- File named as requested
- Uploaded before the deadline, not at it
- My profile headshot looks like the person on this tape
Common questions
How long should a self-tape take?
For most co-star sides, plan for 2 to 3 hours, including setup. Don't do 20 takes. Send your best one or two.
Should I memorize sides for a self-tape?
Know them well enough to look up and play the scene. Glancing at the page is fine. Reading it isn't.
Where do I upload LA self-tapes?
Wherever the request says. Many LA offices use Eco Cast, Breakdown Services' self-tape tool built into Actors Access.
Named client work appears only with permission.
RoseCo does not present invented actors, fictional sites, or unapproved material as client results. Educational frameworks explain the work; approved client examples appear only after delivery and permission.
Callbacks in LA come from a clean tape, the right tone and one specific choice, backed by materials that match.
